XBox update + Scumm

Posted on by Ben

Yeah yeah, long time since update yadda yadda.

Apparently my repaired/new XBox is waiting for pick up by UPS to be sent home again. However I don’t know when it’s going to be picked up, or if it’s even a new box. At least if it’s my old box repaired it should have a beefier heat sink on it.

I’ve formatted my Laptop for the first time since I bought it, so it’s running nice and fast again after a year of filling the hard drive with crap.

On top of that I’ve ordered Sam & Max season 2, as I’ve played through the first season again over the last few days, and remembered how enjoyable it was (It’s more than on par with the original in my opinion). First episode’s downloaded now, so I’ll probably have a go at it later. It’s a shame that the next episode isn’t released till January (and the last doesn’t arrive until April), so I’ll have a quite a wait after I’ve done this episode.

Lucky that I’ve also got ScummVM working with a few old chestnuts to keep me occupied for the next week and six days (hopefully) before I get my beloved XBox back.

ScummVM

As far as I can tell, the only Lucasart’s SCUMM games that I’m missing (that I care about…) are Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, both of which I have at home in Maidenhead on an original Day of the Tentacle disc. (The original Maniac Mansion was a mini game, playable in Day of the Tentacle. If you look explore the disc you can play it standalone, and import it into ScummVM.)

I’m pretty sure that with those two, I’ll have a complete and full collection of all the SCUMM and GrimE games. Go me! (I have The last two Monkey Island Games and Grim Fandango on disc.)

For those of you that have no idea what I’m talking about, and why I’m making such a fuss:

S.C.U.M.MScript Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion.

It was the game engine that the Lucasart’s adventure games from 1987 – 1998 were produced on (and probably one of the first game engines to be used over and over.)

These were really the first proper games that I played and got my hook with. They’re still my favourite kind of games and always will be as there’s so few games like them. (I’m also a big fan of the Broken Sword, Discworld and Simon the Sorcerer games as well.)

I guess this is the reason I’ve been enjoying the new Sam and Max Episode games so much, I’m a geek and proud of it.
